One of the biggest joys of working on NotSuchAModelMum is not only discovering brilliant brands that have been set up by mums,  but also meeting those ‘supermums’ behind the businesses.  We have always dressed our kids in Sunuva Swimwear, as we love both the cool designs and the UV protection in them, and, now, thanks to NotSuchAModelMum, we have been fortunate enough to meet both Sabrina Naggar and Emily Cohen, the brains behind Sunuva.

Emily and Sabrina are two friends who set up a business together – a collaboration between two best buddies that resonates with our own story – and as such, they have proved a huge inspiration for us.  We managed to grab Sabrina for a chat and a cocktail, and ask her some questions about being a mum and running a business.

Okay, so I am writing this blog post whilst sitting in A&E with my two year old asleep on my lap, and waiting for the doctor to stitch the large cut above his eye… that’s the life of a mum of three boys.  Instead of worrying about the cut (he fell off a stool and smacked his eye on some granite) I have decided to turn the inevitable waiting time into something positive and, to balance all that boydom in my life, I am clearly thinking about clothes.  Call me shallow, but nothing beats thinking about simple joys whilst sitting and worrying in triage.

Who doesn’t love a discount code?!  We have been known to spend more time googling discount codes than shopping, only to find codes that don’t work, or that they are ones that only include ” free shipping”.   That is not cool.  This year, however, we have decided to be a bit organised and have done the hard work for you and gathered a comprehensive list of BRILLIANT discount codes that actually work, and that coincide with that scary Black Friday thing!  So fill those virtual shopping bags to the brim and see you at the checkout!

When we first decided to set up NotSuchAModelMum, we only had a couple of things we wanted from this little adventure.  We wanted a good excuse to see each other more – with Caroline in Barcelona and me in London, that was proving difficult, and setting up a blog would be the best excuse to hang out together under the guise of ” work”.  In our dream world, we also wanted to work with different brands, and put into use all those years of modelling and absorbing the different aspects of the fashion industry.  That, and a couple of freebies and we were going to be happy.  Little did we know what would happen…..     Continue Reading

Whenever I meet my girlfriends for supper and we talk about work, they always laugh at me!  In the modelling world, when a model gets booked for a shoot, it is called: ‘confirming a job.’  So I am always met with hysterics when I chat to them about ‘the job’ I did last week.  Apparently, calling shoots ‘a job’ makes me sound like a spy, or like somebody who has an illicit life!  Anyway, it was on a recent such, ahem, ‘job’ that the make up artist whipped out a new concealer – knowing I am a sucker for the latest in concealer  technology.  Being half Indian, my under eye bags can be quite extraordinary, and my skin prone to scarring, so concealers are my best friend!

Every October at the end of half term, I drag my winter coats out of storage, dust them off, bemoan the fact they are still covered in what I like to call “random child crap”, trawl through said pile of winter warmers and claim that I have nothing to wear.  Despite this pile, I then promptly wear the same two or three coats that I wear every winter!  This year, I have another coat to add to my regular winter repertoire collection, and have gone one step further…. the cool, checked pattern will hide all kinds of child related gam.

Sometimes a girl just falls in love with something she knows she shouldn’t have.  It happens to the best of us, and, right now, that girl is me!  It doesn’t matter how hard I try to ignore the desire, occasionally it just gets the better of me.  I am, of course, talking about shopping.  For me, it hit me hard in the form of this sparkling layered sequinned maxi dress.  I just had to have it.  And, surely, with Christmas nearly around the corner, who am I to ignore my craving for the ultimate party dress?!

We are all in search of cheap thrills, right?  Whether it’s that bargain eyeshadow or a cheap sales find on theoutnet.com, the less money we spend, the happier we are!  So imagine how happy we were when we found this top- an easy white t shirt with some cheap frills on the side (sorry about the appalling pun!)

Being a mum is really full on!  Whilst it is clearly wonderful and very special, there are also times when it is completely and utterly overwhelming in every sense.  Any descriptions that use the word “mum” in them should therefore make us mums feel good about ourselves, and be uplifting, positive, and inspiring.  Then how come that is often not the case?

The word “mumsy” is a classic example… In the Oxford Dictionary it is defined as: “giving the impression of dull domesticity; dowdy or unfashionable”.   This offends us to the core, as how on earth can any description with the word ” mum” in it be seen as anything other than a compliment?  So, when Boden asked us to be part of their ” Wear it Like A Mum” campaign, a mission to redefine the word “Mumsy” and to turn it into something positive and complimentary, we jumped at the chance.
